Love and Words

pearl

        __

Who among you,

would crush the pearl

I hold in

my hand?

Who among you

would dare?

Tell me not of its value.

Tell me not of the time

I searched.

Speak to me

not of its beauty

and worth.

Tell me,

only,

it is gone.

Who among you

would cross the line

I have drawn in this sand?

Who among you

would dare?

Speak to me not

of privacy

or pace.

Tell me not of history

or desire.

Tell me,

only,

you are here.

I am older now,

though still young enough

to believe

I am in my beginning,

not nearing my end,

and yet,

my arms grow weary,

my legs ache,

to fold me down

and my soul,

my soul,

almost,

but not quite,

says,

not this lifetime.

Not this when.

Who among you

would crush the pearl

I hold in my hand?

Tell me not of respect,

of freedom,

or the future.

Only take it.

Grind it beneath your heel.

Scatter the fine grains,

and set me

free.

Who among you

Would dare?
